I struggled with the concept of baby led weaning three years ago when we had our first baby. I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to give their baby whole pieces of food before they had even learnt how to move food around in their mouth or got a feel for different tastes, textures and flavours. I just couldn’t comprehend how a baby could feed itself before it had actually learnt to eat.
Three years down the line and I have to admit I’m much more open minded when it comes to weaning with our second baby. Yes I’m still a puree devotee, but I’m not averse to throwing in a stick of cucumber or a few strands of spaghetti at dinner time. So somehow, without really realising it, we have found ourselves taking a more blended approach to weaning second time round. A more flexible, hybrid approach as Annabel Karmel describes it in her new baby led weaning recipe book which hits the shelves today.
But its one thing being open to the approach of baby led weaning and it’s another thing actually doing it. To watch your baby gag, as many of them do in the beginning takes nerves of steel, and I found it tricky figuring out what I could offer my baby beyond toast and the obvious finger friendly foods. So I improvised, testing out through trial and error, what worked and what didn’t until Annabel’s baby lead weaning recipe book came along and filled a very open void.
The book is filled with simple, yet practical advice on how to follow a baby led weaning approach or how to combine it like we are. As well of course as wonderfully tasty, fun and nutritious meal suggestions for baby that are actually perfect for the whole family and that make me feel so inspired and excited about the next stage of our weaning journey. For us its a perfect follow on from Annabel’s Baby and Toddler Meal Planner book that we love and have lived by with both our babies.
But you don’t have to take my word for it, because you could win your very own signed copy!
