The Lopesan Baobab is a 5-star family hotel in the Maspalomas area of Gran Canaria. We visited in July of 2018 for seven nights and stayed in a twin room with a garden view on a half board basis.
When we arrived the first thing we noticed was the size and scale of the hotel. From a distance, it looks fairly unassuming, but once you get closer to it you realise just how big the grounds are. Something that we hadn’t appreciated until we arrived.
Usually, we stay in mid-sized hotels because we like it to feel quiet and un-crowded, but our first impression of the Lopesan Baobab was quite the opposite. That said, I can happily say that it didn’t feel loud or crowded during any stage of our stay.
The Lopesan Baobab certainly know how to make first impressions and experiences count. The entrance to the hotel is incredibly impressive (think safari-style lodge super-sized!). I remember walking in for the first time and feeling like we had just walked into a tropical jungle.
Checking into the hotel was relatively quick and straightforwards. We did have to queue a little, but that of course was eased with the obligatory check-in champagne cocktail.
Our room was pretty much as described and as expected. We had a twin bed, sofa bed, open-style bathroom and balcony. A few surprise bonuses were an amazing wet room and a huge balcony with an upgraded view. Our twin room with a garden view turned out to be more of a pool view (result!).
Our first impressions were good, although we were surprised by how dark our room was. Something worth noting is that because of the design of the hotel, it can feel a little dark in the inner parts of the hotel. That, unfortunately, includes the rooms.
That aside, we were really happy with our room and its relatively central location in the hotel. We were close to the lifts, one of the pools and not too far from the restaurants and hotel entrance. Again worth noting because of the size of the hotel, having a centrally located room could be a game-changer for families.
The hotel itself is set over multiple floors and has everything you would want and expect from a hotel of this calibre. Multiple pools (seven in total), a variety of restaurants, bars, a children’s club, gym and beautiful grounds.
We dined in three of the hotels four restaurants which were all fantastic. For half-board guests, the hotel has two restaurants which it operates on a buffet basis. The other two can be used by all guests, but are not included in the half-board offer.
Whilst we’re not huge fans of buffet-style restaurants we were pleasantly surprised by the range and quality of food. Even our fussy little eaters enjoyed going down to the restaurant at breakfast and dinner.
But the best thing about the hotel is definitely the amenities. By amenities, I mean the pools and the grounds. We spent time in four of the seven pools, with our favourite being the main pool. One of the things that attracted us to the hotel was the children’s pool.
The children’s pool is as impressive as it looks in the photos. It has its own mini water park and is definitely a bonus of staying at the hotel. A few things worth noting is its proximity to the children’s club and separation from all the other pools.
However, that also means it can get incredibly busy. So for us, we preferred to stay by the main pool which had more loungers, space and less noise. Plus the main pool has a lazy river and mini beach so we found the children were just as happy there as they were at the children’s pool.
Other highlights include children’s entertainment. We aren’t massive children’s club people, but our children enjoyed getting involved in the activities. We also spent a bit of time in the gym which had the basics, was nice and cool and never crowded.
The location of the hotel was another bonus. We intentionally picked the Maspalomas area of Gran Canaria as it is one of the more upmarket areas on the island. The Lopesan Baobab is set pretty centrally located in Maspalomas. Just a hop, skip and a jump from the seafront and promenade which has a lovely collection of restaurants and shops.
As far as hotels go, the Lopesan Baobab is fantastic. It delivers a five-star quality stay and experience. The hotel is modern, spacious and a joy to be in. It honestly felt otherworldly at times. The staff are friendly, accommodating and great with children. Whilst it was a little on the large side for us, we would definitely recommend it as a great place to stay if you’re looking for a quality family hotel in Gran Canaria.
