2016: The Year Of Opportunity

Blog Quote

Over the last few days I’ve loved reading so many other bloggers reflective posts looking back on 2015 and what they have achieved, and have been inspired by those looking forward to 2016 and what they want to achieve. All week I have been wanting to put pen to paper, figuratively not literally of course, to write this post. But every time I have opened my laptop I have struggled to write a single word. It was so frustrating. I knew there was something I wanted to say, but after reflecting on it I realised I didn’t know what to write because I wasn’t clear on what I wanted 2016 to hold for us as a family or for me as an individual. Looking back on 2015 and everything that we have achieved as a family, I realised that 2016 for us isn’t about having big and bold ambitions and goals, but about building on all the amazing things we achieved in 2015. It’s about finding, creating and seizing opportunities. But most of all its about enjoying, and I mean truly enjoying, what we have accomplished together.

That’s not to say that we’ll sit back and rest on our laurels. I hate not having a plan, something to aspire to and work towards. I always have to have something that is motivating and driving me forwards. But 2015 was such a phenomenal year for us, it’s just that I didn’t realise it until I sat down and properly reflected on it.

It was a year that saw us finally get on the housing ladder and buy our first family home. The husband and I had spent years and years talking about, dreaming about and working towards buying our first home. For so long, that as we grew as people and as a family so did our idea of the perfect dream home. From a lovely little two bed starter home to a three bed semi-detached family home. We are so lucky and fortunate that we have been able to buy our dream home the first time round, it’s an absolute dream come true and I pinch myself almost every day in happiness.

Family HolidayIt was the year that we took our first family holiday abroad with the little lady. At the very last minute in August we decided to book a short family holiday to Cyprus. It wasnt something we expected to be able to do and it was so last minute and sporadic that it almost never happened, but I’m so glad it did. It was one of the best decisions we made spontaneously last year and we now have the most wonderful memories that will last us a lifetime. From the little lady’s first flight on a plane, to her first time in a swimming pool and first trip to the beach. It was the perfect five day mini adventure and such a lovely experience, I almost wish we ventured abroad with the little lady sooner!

LaptopIt was the year that I fell back in love with blogging and finally discovered my passion. 2015 was a tumultuous year of ups and downs at work. With so much going on in our personal and family life, it was hard to keep all the wheels turning and I found myself running back to my blog desperate for an outlet to talk about it all and express myself. It was the most challenging moment in my career and I wouldn’t have got through it without my blog. It was also the most difficult life experience I have ever been through, but it was a valuable one. Because from it I have learnt what is truly important to me and where my real passion lies.

GLTC Nativity SceneIt was also the year that we found out that we were expecting baby number two and expanding our family from three to a four. The husband and I had talked about expanding our family in the last year, and whilst this is a little earlier than we had would have planned for we are delighted. Delighted to be giving the little lady a sibling, delighted to become parents again and delighted to create another little person. We can’t wait to meet them.

Looking Forwards…

We have an exciting year ahead of us, jam packed with big life events for us and our families. My beautiful little sister will be getting married in the summer, just one month after baby arrives. I cant wait to see her walk down the aisle, and as the Maid of Honor I want to make sure I play my part to give her the perfect day. Being pregnant during the run up to the wedding and then juggling a three year old and a new born on the day might prove to be a little tricky, but we’re determined to make it all work!

My lovely Sister in law will be getting married in Mauritius the following month in August. This has been in our diary for the last year and we were all set to go, but now we need to figure out whether that is still feasible, and more importantly whether it is sensible. There’s a lot of things to consider like vaccinations and passports for the new baby, but then after leaving it so long to travel with the little lady a part of me thinks we should just go for it! We really don’t want to let our family down, but we do have to make sure we make the right decision for us too.

At the end of last year I was offered a fantastic new opportunity at work starting from this January, and whilst I’ll only have a six month run at it I love a challenge so am grabbing it with both hands. This is probably the biggest career opportunity I’ve had to date and has completely reenergised me. It’ll be a busy and challenging run up to maternity leave, but I’m really excited about getting stuck into it, pushing myself and seeing what I can do.

I also want to grow my blog. With maternity leave comes the opportunity to dedicate more time to My Petit Canard. I want to do so much more with it and I know I can. I want to refine my craft, look for more opportunities to work and collaborate with brands and bloggers that I love, build more fantastic relationships, attend events, meet ups and blogging conferences, build my brand and perhaps, just perhaps find my elusive tribe that I keep reading about! Of course I’ll have a new baby and toddler to juggle it with, but at least I’ll have a reason to look forward to night feeds again.

I also really want us to do more together as a family this year. To explore more, be more adventurous and go on more mini adventures together. I have a real urge to see and explore more of the british countryside and our national heritage. I really love the idea of lots of long weekends away by the coast and in the countryside, in beautiful cottages, holiday homes and maybe even caravans. Some of my best childhood memories are of family holidays just like these, simple but lovely.

But most importantly this year we’ll be celebrating the arrival of a new family member in June. I want to enjoy my maternity leave with my two little ones and make the most of every day in our little bubble. I loved it the first time round and intend to enjoy and make the most of it just as much, if not more this time round.

So here’s to 2016, a year filled with opportunity and possbility. But most of all, a year filled with happiness, joy and love.

What are you looking forward to about 2016, and what did you love about 2015?

Congratulations on all you have accomplished in the past year. I was in exactly the same boat as you, not knowing what i can put down for this year so when it finally happened i think it was a more authentic reflection of what i wanted to say. Sometimes there is so much to be grateful for in life that you feel inadequate to put into words a request and a prayer for more. I hope this year is full of happiness and connection for you, Thanks for a great linky
