When I first started hosting blog giveaways the number of entries were pretty dismal. I could never understand why the numbers of entries were so low, but dismissed it thinking it was related to traffic until I realised that didn’t make sense. So I decided to take a different tack and started to research and look at what others were doing when they were hosting successful blog giveaways. Like a puzzle lots of different things started to come together until I had a pretty comprehensive list of things to do. Things that many have done to help to get them tens, hundreds and in some instances even thousands of entries for their giveaways.
When I started my first blog giveaway I had tens of entries. But when I implemented the steps I am about to show you my entries increased by 4880%. Crazy right?! All in a matter of a few weeks and just from doing these things. So I wanted to share what I learnt about promoting and driving traffic and interest to your giveaway.
This isnt a step by step guide on how so set up a specific giveway, but it is a list of things you can do to get the best result. So if you’re hosting a blog giveaway any time soon, these are the things that you need to know!
How to host a successful blog giveaway!
Getting Set Up
To start with, make sure you have the right type of blog set up to host a giveaway. For example, there are limitations on WordPress hosted blogs that prevent running a giveaway. Generally as a rule of thumb, if you are self hosted you can run a giveaway.
Use a plug-in like Gleam or Rafflecopter to host and moderate your competition. Have a look around at whats out there and find one that suits what you are looking for. These seem to be the most popular two.
Make sure you write and include specific T&Cs for your competition. You can include a range of things, but at the very least you should note any limitations to competition entries, e.g UK entrants only, or over 18 entries only, when the competion opens and closes, how the winner will be selected and contacted, when the prize will be sent and who it will be sent by.
Consider what you’d like to promote for yourself and/or the brand that you are working with and tailor the giveaway entry options accordingly. For example, do you want to drive more traffic to a twitter account or You Tube channel, or do you want to encourage more blog comments which could contain a wealth of useful information. Decide and then tailor.
Run the competition for a reasonable period of time. Based on my experience so far I would suggest 2 – 4 weeks ideally. Any less than this and it may be difficult to promote it enough, but experiment with different durations for giveaways and see what works best for you.
If the prize is being provided by a company or PR rep agree upfront for them to send the prize to the winner as part of the collaboration rather than you having to incur the postage costs.
Add your competition to competition hosting sites and forums; Competition Database, Money Saving Expert Competitions Forum, Loquax and Hot Deals UK
Add your competition to linkies related to the competition prize. For example if the prize is a child’s toy, add it to parenting linkies. If it is a beauty prize and it to beauty linkies.

Promote, Promote, Promote
Ask the brand/PR to help promote your giveaway
Schedule tweets so that you are regularly promoting your giveaway daily. Use hashtags #win #comp #competition #giveaway when tweeting. On Fridays also use #FreebieFriday
